case study: usa today

online version of the nation's newspaper

unique challenge
translate the unique usa today brand to the web creating a 24-hour news site

conley was part of the founding five-person team responsible for the interface design, production and launch of USA TODAY's web site.

conley developed the use of photoshop as a primary production tool, inventing a channel and guide structure that allowed graphic production of the usa today news fronts to be automated. he also developed the template system for automating the twice-daily update of the usa today weather maps. conley's online design philisopies helped make usa today faster to download, easier to update and friendlier to users.

while at usa today, he pioneered the site's use of frames, shockwave, gif animation and conceived and implemented virtually all of its design guidelines and philosophies regarding bandwidth and production.

applying tools in ways they had never been used before, conley shaped the nature of online news design and delivery and the effects of his work can be seen in thousands of web sites.

conley left usa today in 1996 to develop conley interactive.
